Upgrade Instructions

The SLIM-Suite 7.0 upgrade consists of five steps. Because this point release includes both the 2008 trend lines and associated sample files, the upgrade process is a bit more involved than usual. If you would prefer to have QSM ship you an installable product CD, please contact Kate Armel at 301 865-8242 or email support@qsm.com.  The following directions are designed to help SLIM users understand the process.

Please note the following instructions:

• If you are running a prior version of 7.0 (7.0a - 7.0c2), download the 7.0c3 upgrade to update SLIM Suite to the latest version. The 7.0c3 upgrade includes the 7.0c4 upgrade.
• If you upgraded to 7.0c3 prior to 9/28/09, you do not need to download the 7.0c3 upgrade again. Download and install the 7.0c4 upgrades to update SLIM-Suite to the latest version.

Product upgrades are grouped by application (ex.: SLIM-Estimate, SLIM-Control, etc.). If you are upgrading four applications (SLIM-Estimate, SLIM-Control, SLIM-DataManager and SLIM-Metrics), you would follow these steps:

   1. Download the SLIM-Estimate, SLIM-Control, SLIM-DataManager and SLIM-Metrics upgrade files. This replaces the .exe, .run, and .tlb files for Estimate, Control, DataManager and Metrics. Remember, this is an example. If you are upgrading SLIM-Estimate, SLIM-MasterPlan and SLIM-DataManager only, you do not need to download and install the SLIM-Metrics upgrades. If you are upgrading SLIM-MasterPlan, you will need to add the MasterPlan upgrade files to the list. DataManager upgrades should always be downloaded.

   2. Download ONE COPY of Samples_70.zip (it doesn't matter which section of the Downloads page you get it from - they are all the same).

   3. Download Template updates (if any) for each application being upgraded. Note that DataManager does not have associated templates. There is a new trend line building template for SLIM-Metrics that makes generating user trends easier.

   4. DO ONLY IF YOU ARE RUNNING SLIM-SUITE FROM A NETWORK: download ONE COPY of the Workstation install upgrade and unzip it to the Workstation Setup folder on the server. You will find this folder in the Tools70 directory.

Now that the general process has been outlined, here are step by step directions for the upgrade:

Installing the Upgrade Files

   1. Before upgrading, please make sure that you have SLIM Suite 7.0 already installed on your local machine or on a network server. The upgrade is not designed to replace a normal installation. It only updates selected files and assumes you already have version 7.0 installed. If you are running an earlier version of SLIM Suite, contact QSM support or your software administrator for further instructions.

   2. Each product (SLIM-Estimate, SLIM-Control, etc.) has one or more zip files containing the associated product upgrades for that application. There are also Sample files, Template files, and a Workstation upgrade (to be downloaded if, and only if, you are running SLIM from a network).

      To download the updates, go to the QSM downloads page (http://www.qsm.com/file_library.html). The downloads are separated into tool-specific categor! ! ies with one section for each application.

      Note: Each area of the Downloads page contains ONE SAMPLES UPGRADE and ONE WORKSTATION UPGRADE file. These files are exactly the same in each section. YOU ONLY NEED TO DOWNLOAD THESE ZIP FILES ONCE.

   3. You will need usernames and passwords to access the upgrades. Please register here to request the necessary password for your SLIM Tool(s) upgrade.

      Note: Please type in the username and password in all lower case characters.  If you use caps, the username is accepted, but the password does not work and you will receive an "Acce! ! ss Denied" error message.

   4. Download and unzip the Upgrade files  to your Tools70 application folder  (the default location is c:\Program Files\QSM\Tools70). If you are not sure where your application folder is located, find the shortcut you use to launch the applications, right click on it, and select the "Properties" or "Shortcut" tab. The path to the application folder will be in the "Target" field. Example:

      "C:\Program Files\QSM\Tools70\SMETRICS.EXE"

      Unzip the product upgrade files to your Tools70 folder. You should expect to see "replace" prompts notifying you that you are replacing an older version of each file with a newer version.

   5. Where applicable, download and extract the Template upgrade files to the Templates folder located inside your Tools70 folder. Note that some SLIM applications do not have templates.

   6. Download ONE COPY of Samples_70.zip and extract it to the Samples folder located inside your Tools70 folder. If you are running from a network, download ONE COPY of the Workstation upgrade and extract it to the Workstation Setup folder inside the Tools70 directory on the server.

   7. Finally, run vcredist_86.exe, the Microsoft redistributable installer. This file should be located in your Tools70 folder once you have downloaded the DataManager product upgrade. You MUST download and execute this file or SLIM Suite will not work.

   8. That's it! Once you have copied all upgrade files into Tools70 directory or to the associated subfolders inside the Tools70 directory, your SLIM-Suite applications will be upgraded to the latest version and all Samples and Templates will be updated to the latest versions.
